Native americans
Some Basic Background Info:
Native Americans today are made up of many different tribes and ethnic groups. They were the original people of the America's. When the European people immigrated to America, many problems were caused with the Native American people. "The differences in cultures between the established Native Americans and immigrant Europeans, as well as shifting alliances among different nations of each culture through the centuries, caused extensive political tension, ethnic violence and social disruption." (Wikipedia).
The European people brought many epidemics to the Americas and the Native Americans and indigenous people suffered great loss after coming in contact with these epidemics. "The Native Americans suffered high fatalities from the contact with infectious Eurasian diseases, to which they had no acquired immunity." (Wikipedia).
In order to help European expansion in Americas, the government passed the Indian Removal Act in 1830 to move all Native American people west of the Mississippi River. As United States expansion continued settler and miner migrants came into increasing conflict with many Western tribes. "These were complex nomadic cultures based on horse culture and seasonal bison hunting. They Native Americans had strong resistance to United States incursions in the decades after the American Civil War, in a series of Indian Wars, which were frequent up until the 1890s, but continued into the 20th century.
They were encouraged to take on the European style of life but many stuck with their own way of life and beliefs. They were pushed mostly into reservations in the Western states, land and many rights taken away from them. The Native Americans were not always treated fairly or equally and suffered through many struggles during the coming to America and all the immigration. While there are still Native American communities today, around 2 million in the U.S., the population is no where near where it once was.
They struggle to maintain their lifestyles on their reservations, not to mention many other struggles they endure, some of which our group is going to educate you on today.
